Well, I think you got it a little wrong in your definitions there. In RTS games 'Balance' means that every unit has its place and every unit has another unit(s) that can successfully defeat it. A unit that counters another doesn't necessarily mean that it would beat it in a 1vs1 though. For example let's take the Cuirassiers in AoE3 which are super expensive (150G, 150F) and are the strongest mounted units in the game that also build and you can build them only late in the game. On the other hand you have pike men which counter mounted units but they are rather cheap (40F, 40W) and easy to build. Now, you can't really expect for one pike men to deal with a cuirassier but if you take let's say three pike men (120F, 120W) they will be more then a match for a cuirassier. I don't know about those "fast pace" games. Fast pace to me just means that everything is relatively cheap and you can train allot of units quickly and they also don't last much in the battlefield because they die after a few hits. You can't say C&C Generals is a "fast pace game" by your definition. In C&C Generals you need to have excellent map control and usually the player who can control more resources and more access points to his enemy's base wins. Also, because counters are so strong there (for example infantry would get obliterated by flamethrower tank while they barely deal any damage to him) it's important to be able to scout on your enemy and make sure you create counters to the units he make. That's how I see things.

Hmm... I like the building aspect of the game but I usually like the features involved with the fighting system. That's really the only reason I like EE2, such as the improving of patrolling and of course much more

EE is more of a faster pace, nothing requires you at actually build a city, so I voted that.

i voted for balanced because you always need a good economy to supply good military, known fact in history. (eg. Britain before ww2, Chamberlain spent alot of time building the economy before the war)

well, i like both balannced, and slightly faster paced, i find them kind of like two different types of games, EE type games are great, and the classic C&C's are great, "Just Battles - No building up require, require lots of tactics than just spamming units. (Total War series)" are you refering to the quick battle thing? cause in the normal/campaign mode you need to build up your cities etc, before you can build an army.

Yeah me too, I like "balanced RTS games". "Slightly Faster Pace" is good too. But I normally get bored of them after I've played it for only a few weeks.

What exactly does "balanced" mean? Fighting and building?

What I mean by balanced is that you need to build up your economy first before you can go to war. Like in EE and EEII you can build quite a lot of buildings to improve your empire. There are more types of resources. While in "silghtly faster pace" games you still need to build up your economy first but it can be done a lot faster. Most buildings would be military, very few would be economic buildings.
My dream RTS game would be a combination of both types of games...
Gameplay from Rise and Fall Special features from EEII(such as war planners, weather system, etc...) Balance from EE(I personally think balance from EE is great) Game Editor from EE. Graphics from AoEIII(that's not very important)

Most of the time, I like my RTS games to be of a fast paced nature, akin to Command & Conquer. It gives me a quick and enjoyable game. However, if I have time on my hands, I will fire up Empire Earth, a Total War game or perhaps a TBS. I find the slower paced strategy titles a little more addictive.
