I have been testing out in the map editor by making different units battling each other. One thing I found is a way to beat the crossbowman + ballista army without using the same tactics. So, I set all players to Human so they won't run around like mad. First I tried to use 8 Armoured Cavalry vs 20 Crossbowmen alone, obviously it was very successful. Then I used 15 Mounted Skirmishers vs 8 ballistas. Suprisingly the Mounted Skirmishers won the battle and I only lost about 5 of them.
Then I tried to combine the crossbowmen and ballistas vs the cavalry army. At the first battle I just send all my units on attack move and I have lost the battle. But then I tried another stratagy by sending my Mounted Skirmishers behind the enemy army and let my Armoured Cavalry charge straight through, so the skirmishers can attack the ballistas and the Armoured Cavalry attack the Crossbowmen. And I won with the lost of 5 Armoured Cavalry and just 1 Mounted Skirmisher.
I did that in med pace so not sure if this works for fast pace. I need to do some further testing out in the multiplayer as well as the map editor.

same, very interesting. where and when you place your men into battle can have a big effect on the output.

If this tactics does work(which I hope), we'll be able to bring EEII out of boredom. Because everyone will start to use combined forces, not just 2 types of units!
